MT. BAKER

Mt. Baker ski area has an abundance of readily accessed backcountry areas, almost all visible from the parking lot. Here, conflict has occurred repeatedly over safe travel practices. In addition, snowshoers and skiers often share the same uptracks, resulting in tough skinning in heavily trafficked zones. We want to:

  • Try to funnel uphill traffic into safer travel routes via signage and education. Currently, this is happening on an individual and illegal basis.

  • Improve parking and access along the 542 corridor. Along with the Whatcom County Snowmobile association, we've identified two places of high value to the winter recreation community, both motorized and non-motorized. Our current priorities are the Twin Lakes/Winchester Mountain Lookout road and the Skyline divide road. Both of these trailheads offer access to excellent ski terrain, but are not plowed and have limited or nonexistent parking in the winter. We are currently discussing options with the Forest Service here, and urge you to contact Erin Uloth, District Ranger, at euloth@fs.fed.us with your input.
